I think I’m Turning Middle Aged
Dear World,
Today is my birthday.
38 seems like a big number to me. At least I remembered looking at people who were “Adults”, who were the same age, thinking that they had attained a sacred knowledge, one which told them what to do and when to do it. The reality that we are just children with expense accounts, is one of the most uncomfortable realities I have yet faced. On the other hand, 38 years old is somewhere estimated to be the 40th to 50th percentile of survival across the span of recorded human history. So, at least there’s that.
The difference between 28 and 38 for me is the amount of catchup I’ve made in my professional career. I now have 4 books out in the wild. I have a lead position at my day job. I have a house, a place to call my own, and my guitar playing progresses. All worthy personal achievements.
But what of the things that really matter: the spiritual? I ‘ve been able to grow in my relationships with my neighbors and further contribute to the amazing church and church family that I have made. Above all things, I am the most content with that, when the day is done.
Saying a “hey! How are ya?” to my nephew, who shares my birthday, never ceases to delight and warm my soul.
Tonight, I plan of going to the locals only bar that I’m a member of: The Backroom. You get a free beer on your birthday!
Otherwise, Just thinking about all the cool things to come. Life, despite the unrelenting anxiety attacks, has never been better. It has brought me closer to God and will continue to do so. (Thank the lord for pharmaceuticals also!)
Best,
Stuart
